Saint Mary's ends tourney drought with win over Richmond

NCAA Basketball Betting Lines

03/18/2010 - Providence, RI (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Omar Samhan led all scorers with 29 points and added 12 rebounds, as Saint Mary's earned an 80-71 win over Richmond in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Mickey McConnell hit five three-pointers and finished with 23 points, while Clint Steindl made 3-of-5 from beyond the arc and donated 11 points for Saint Mary's (27-5), which earned the 10th seed in the South Region and will meet second-seeded Villanova in the second round on Saturday. The Wildcats escaped with a 73-70 overtime win against No. 15 seed Robert Morris earlier on Thursday.

The Gaels improved to 2-5 all-time in the tourney with their other win coming back in 1959 against Idaho.

"I'm real proud of this team," Samhan said. "Coming into the year nobody thought we were going to be good. Coming into Saturday, nobody expects us to win that, that's our next stepping-stone. Every win is building. Every time it just builds and builds. It's a huge chip on our shoulder and we love that nobody expects us to do it."

David Gonzalvez had a team-best 18 points for Richmond (26-9), which came into the NCAA Tournament as the seventh seed in the South Region. The Spiders entered the tournament as the Atlantic 10 Conference runner-up after falling 56-52 to Temple in the championship game. Kevin Anderson and Ryan Butler ended with 16 and 14 points, respectively.

"I don't feel like we lost the game because of our offense," Anderson said. "We definitely lost the game because of our defense. It was just hard to guard Samhan. He played a great game."

The Spiders' 26 victories this season tied a school record.

Tied at 36-all at the half, Saint Mary's went up 50-42 following a three- pointer by Steindl with 13:50 to play in the second. The Gaels' lead swelled to 15, 65-50, after Steindl finished off an 8-0 run with another triple with 7:32 remaining.

Richmond was only able to get to within nine, 74-65, with 2:29 left and never threatened the outcome the rest of the way.

In a back-and-forth first half, Butler's three-pointer put Richmond up by five, 24-19, with 9:06 remaining, and the lead reached six after Anderson hit a jumper with 4:33 to play in the stanza.

Dan Geriot's layup kept the Spiders in front 36-33 with 41 seconds left in the half, before McConnell's triple in the waning seconds tied things heading into the locker room.

Game Notes

Sportsbook betting odds favor Europe in Ryder Cup

September 19, – Despite holding a decided edge in the all-time series, with 24 wins, 2 ties and 10 losses, Team USA is the underdog again heading into the Ryder Cup in Kidare, Ireland this weekend, according to MySportsbook.com.  The Europeans have captured four of the past five editions, including their largest victory ever, an 18 ½ to 9 ½ thumping in Michigan in 2004. Current Ryder Cup betting odds favor the Europeans to continue their winning ways; they are a 4-5 bet to take the title, compared to 6-5 for the Americans.

Despite being knocked out in the first round of World Match play by Shaun Micheel, Tiger Woods is predicted to lead the US charge and be their highest point scorer for the week, with odds listed at 9-4 that he outpoints all other American players, including Jim Furyk, Phil Mickelson and Chris DiMarco to  name a  few.  Team USA has four relatively unknown players on the roster but all four are 2007 tournament winners and have posted some of season’s best performances, each earning over $1.5 million on the PGA TOUR.  They include Zach Johnson, Vaughan Taylor, JJ Henry and Brett Wetterich.

The experienced European squad includes the likes of Luke Donald, Sergio Garcia, Padraig Harrington, Jose Maria Olazabal and Darren Clarke, who’s emotions will be tested after the passing of his wife to a battle with cancer.  Donald and Garcia are in particularly good form and each is a 5-1 bet to lead the European squad in the points race. Donald has proven he can go head to head with Woods at a major event after a run for the $1.2 million purse at the PGA Championship. Garcia’s Ryder Cup credentials prove he’s ready for battle too.

Kurt Warner to start, Matt Leinart to watch

Despite the debate that's swirling , Kurt Warner will remain the starting quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals, coach Dennis Green said today. The Arizona Cardinals are the +7 point underdog at online sportsbook MySportsbook.com for this Sunday's game.

Green's comment came in a statement released by the team following an ESPN report that Green decided that rookie Matt Leinart would replace Warner as starter for Sunday's game at Atlanta.

"Generally talking about the starting lineup is not something we do," Green told the AP. "However, given the speculation that was out there we want to make it clear. We're disappointed after last week, but we still expect to be a playoff football team and we fully expect Kurt Warner to be the quarterback that leads us. That has not changed."
